PLANCKS 2019 – A National Competition?

Do you know what PLANCKS is?

It is the Physics League Across Numerous Countries for Kickass Students and in 2019, its 6th edition is going to take place from the 17th to the 19th of May in Odense, Denmark!

It is the theoretical team Physics Competition that decides which country has the most kickass students. šŸ˜‰ Each country can send 2 (or 3) teams of 3 to 4 bachelor or master students. However, how do you choose who represents your country?

Well, you organise a preliminary! A PLANCKS preliminary is a national qualifier PLANCKS competition, where several teams from your country compete for a place in the final!

If you are considering organising a preliminary, you can find all the useful information in theĀ Info-package. If you want to host a preliminary but donā€™t know how to do it, you can also check severalĀ PLANCKS Preliminary ExamplesĀ and see what fits your country the best! After you decide to host a Preliminary, please register itĀ here.

What are you waiting for? Find out more about PLANCKS 2019 hereĀ and get involved!

School Day 2017, November 10th

Usually one might think of an international event to be located at some place one has to travel to ā€“ which can be a huge effort not everyone is able to take. Therefore, we are particularly proud of the IAPS School Day concept which was established in 2015 during the UN International Year of Light. Itā€™s both local and international!

On the 10th of November, the World Science Day for Peace and Development, all our members perform locally at their universities or in schools a project day for high school students under a common topic. The topic for this year is ā€œAcousticsā€. One of the goals with this international event is to make more pupils interested in physics. To sum up, the School Day can be run locally, but it can still be internationally connected e.g. via video calls between committees.

So come letā€™s join hands together to educate and inspire the world with beauty of Physics and play a part of a tone to this wonderful melody of science education and outreach.

Got some ideas and plans on activities and your model of celebrating the School Day? Maybe you could be of help to many others willing to participate. Do send us your plans and ideas at edu (at) iaps.info or at binod.bhattarai (at) iaps.info. Or are you wondering how you can model a day and activities? Do write us at any of our above email addresses with your questions and queries. We will connect you with other interested committees like yours and you can collaborate to participate in the School Day together.

You can get some help from the following guideline adapted from our IYL, School Day Guideline. However, please note that you donā€™t have to stick to this guideline and you may design the day and activities you want to include as per your wish and needs.

While you start modelling your school day event, do your activities require experimental setups and instruments ? Is the financial need stopping your association from organizing the best School Day event you have planned? Do not worry, you can also apply for the famous IAPS School Day Grant. IAPS is willing to support up to 400 Euros per association as a support for organizing the School Day with up to 1200 Euros given out by IAPS in total. You can find the link to the grant callĀ here. Send us a proposal before October 15, 2017.

Particle and Astroparticle Physics Autumn Programme (registration deadline 10 July at 1 pm (CEST)

The Particle and Astroparticle Physics Programme is coming to its second edition, this time to be held in the autumn. Following last year’s great success, the Italian Association of Physics Students (AISF) and IAPS will be organising a similar event, also including some new features and further improvements.

During the Programme, 40 students will be visiting the National Gran Sasso Laboratory and the Gran Sasso Science Institute in central Italy and the INFN laboratories in Frascati, Rome. Participants will meet in Rome, then move to the city of L’Aquila by coach and eventually return to Rome for departure. The event will have a focus on astroparticle physics, but a number of other topics will be touched upon, including theoretical physics, nuclear physics, high energy collisions and cosmology. Students will be expected to have a basic understanding of these subjects in order to effectively make the most of the programme.

The complete event programme for 2016 can be downloaded here.

Registration and further information can be found here.

Register no later than 10 July at 1 pm (CEST).

In the last week of April almost 50 students met in Geneva, Switzerland to visit CERN. The annual excursion organised by the IAPS EC always reached a high number of interested physics students from all over the world. This year highly motivated people from 15 different countries spent two days at the CERN facilities. Apart from listening to a lecture and building their own cloud chamber, they also walked underground at the CMS detector site.
If you are interested in the excursion for next year, note it down now. The registration will be open again in December.

For now, you can find photos of the event here.

Lights of Tuscany

A group of motivated physics students joined together just before Christmas in order to spend some days in the beautiful area of Tuscany, Italy and learn more about light-related research and technologies.

The organisers from AISF did an amazing job in the creation of this new event! At the opening ceremony, a set of LIGHTalks gave an introduction into medical applications, quantum sensors, the research done at the University of Pisa and much more. We later visited the European Laboratory for Nonlinear Spectroscopy (LENS) near Florence, where researchers described to us their work on photonics, atomic and biophysics. On Saturday afternoon, we spent some hours at the University of Pisa Physics Department and then at The European Gravitational Observatory EGO-VIRGO. This enormous facility, with arms of a Michelson interferometer extending for several kilometers, aims at proving the existence of gravitational waves through the use of advanced laser technology. On Sunday, we spent a fantastic day in Florence, which is undoubtedly a unique and wonderful city!

We concluded the event with visits of the NEST and TeCIP institutes of the Scuola Normale and Scuola Santā€™Anna of Pisa, where we were inspired by great work on nanotechnology and integrated photonics.

The event offered many possibilities to get in contact with researchers at the individual institutes as well as with students from around the world. With participants coming from 14 countries, the event was a true international one.

Many thanks to the organisers!
