iaps2cern 2014 application has been extended!

Dear friends,
We apologize for the silence during a while, but here are some news!

Good News #1: this year, we are going to stay at the very heart of the CERN! We are glad to announce that IAPS has been allowed to stay in the CERN hostel on the site. (As you might now, before we usually had to accommodate our group in a Youth Hostel in Geneva).

Good News #2: the number of places has been increased from 28 to 46!
Thus we still welcome your applications as the deadline has been extended.

The dates remain official: from Tuesday 22 April 2014 to Friday 25 April 2014.

At the same time, we had to try hard to fit this into the project’s budget. In order to keep the trip participation cost on the same level (€ 90 for IAPS members and € 100 for non IAPS members) and to keep it affordable for undergraduates, we had to give up a few perks. Now, the participation fee includes:

NO meals (even breakfast)
NO Geneva transportation card

Still, many solutions are possible on the spot and this will not be a problem but we want to make you aware of this and that you will have a few more expenses during the trip.

If you have already submitted your application, your application is still recorded and we will contact you directly to ask you to confirm. Please pay attention to these changes in the conditions and personally decide if this is OK for you.

Open Readings Conference 2014 in Lithuania

We are very pleased to announce the 57th International Conference for Students of Physics and Natural Sciences in Vilnius, Lithuania on 19-21 March, 2014. It will focus on biophysics, medicine, environmental science, chemistry, laser physics, condensed matter physics, theoretical physics and much more. Well, it’s that time of the year again! We’re launching the registration for the annual international study visit to CERN, the European Center of Nuclear Research.

Good news: the dates of the event are confirmed! We will squeeze in to feel all the Nobel Prize winning research from Tuesday 22 April 2014 to Friday 25 April 2014.

Bad news: only 28 places available this year! Some selection will be necessary…

Winter Kindergarten of Theoretical Physics 2014

The Society of Physics Students Migacz, University of Wroclaw Faculty of Physics and Astronomy are pleased to announce the Winter Kindergarten of Theoretical Physics 2014 which will take place in Karpacz, Poland, from March 2^nd to 9^th (Sunday–Sunday), 2014. It will be organized in partnership with the well-known Winter School of Theoretical Physics.

The Kindergarten is a week-long conference designed for undergraduate and master students (PhD students are encouraged to take part in the 50^th School of Theoretical Physics). The programme provides participants with lectures for every level of knowledge, including lectures given by special guests from the School of Theoretical Physics. Also all lectures of the School are opened for participants of the Kindergarten.

Students can participate actively either by giving a fifteen-minutes-long speech or a lecture lasting up to one hour.

Short speeches are recommended for younger students, who are willing to present their current projects or scientific interests. Apart from that there will be a poster session, with obligatory three-minute presentation about the poster’s topic.

This year Kindergarten is expanding to a new area – computational physics. It is a branch of science, where Physics meets computers and numerical methods. Therefore we invite you to take part in lectures and workshops devoted especially to this subject.

On the other hand, the scientific classes will be interspersed with skiing, snowboarding and mountain trips.

Kindergarten’s participants are strongly encouraged to prepare their own lectures or posters.

The Winter Kindergarten of Theoretical Physics 2014 will be held on March 2-9, 2014 in Krucze Skały resort in Karpacz (50° 46′ 10.80″ N, 15° 46′ 2.97″ E).

The conference fee is 820 PLN (approx. 200 EUR). It includes full-board accommodation in and Wroclaw–Karpacz–Wrocław transfer.

ICPS 2013 is here!

On August 15, the 28th International Conference of Physics Students ICPS 2013 opened!

This year it is hosted by Heriot-Watt University here in Edinburgh, Scotland. It’s the second ICPS to ever take place in the United Kingdom. Some 270 participants have already had a chance to explore the Scotland’s capital during it’s Fringe Festival and dance at a real Scottish Ceilidh.

Just tomorrow, on August 18, the Annual General Meeting of IAPS will take place and we will learn the new Executive Committee and the location of ICPS 2015!

European Science Education Academy Workshop

The European Physical Society invites you to attend the
European Science Education Academy Workshop
to discuss the framework for the development of the European Science Education Academy.

Four sessions are being planned to enable participants to join in different discussions:
– Theme A: Toward a Standard-Based Approach to Teaching science by Inquiry
– Theme B: Defining Best Practices in Teachers preparation programmes
– Theme C: Methods for improving teacher effectiveness in schools
– Theme D: Best Practices in implementing Inquiry Based Science Education in Schools

The Workshop will take place at IBEROSTAR CRETA PANORAMA Hotel at Panormo, Crete, the 1st-3rd July 2013.
It will be organised in parallel with the PATHWAY Summer School.
